What makes your house smell good?
Make A House Smell Good
A tidy room is undoubtedly nice, but a clean room with a fresh scent can really brighten up your home. Why not take this extra step and make your house just a bit cozier? There are myriad ways to do so, and most take very little time at all.
Here are some ideas that might come in handy when you’re figuring out how to make a house smell good after your daily cleaning or tidying.
Candle Warmers
When it comes to figuring out how to make your home smell good, scented candles are by far one of the easiest methods available. And, thanks to candle warmers, you no longer have to worry about soot or smoke. In addition, scented wax discs may retain their scent longer, as you’re heating the wax rather than burning it. There are thousands of different scents on the market, so choose your favorite and your home could be filled with traces of pumpkin pie or fresh vanilla in a matter of minutes.
Essential Oil Sprays and Diffusers
Diffusers and sprays that contain essential oils are all the rage right now and with good reason: They emit delicious aromas that gently waft through your home. You can easily purchase a diffuser online or in the store. You can also buy sprays, but if you enjoy a good DIY project, they’re pretty easy to make.
- An 8-ounce spray bottle with a fine mister
- 2 tablespoons of high-proof vodka or real vanilla extract
- ¾ cup of water (Distilled or tap will work fine.)
- A combination of essential oils
- Pour all of the ingredients into your spray bottle.
- Shake well to combine.
- Spritz whenever your rooms are in need of perking up.
Houseplants
A potted palm or hanging fern is a great way to add a splash of color and life to any room. But if you choose your plants right, you could have the added bonus of a sweet-smelling home. Fragrant herbs, like rosemary, thyme and basil, can often thrive in kitchen windows, assuming you get good light and have ample space. You could also opt for larger potted houseplants, such as jasmine, scented geraniums or even citrus trees.
Note: If you have small children, keep houseplants out of reach unless you’re absolutely certain they’re non-toxic. Additionally, many plants that are safe for humans may be hazardous to furry and feathered friends. Research any greenery you bring into the home to make sure you’re not introducing toxins into your pets’ environment.
Simmer Pots
One quick way to make your home smell fresh and clean is to whip up a simmer pot. The nice thing about this method is that you may be able to make it with ingredients you already have at home, especially if you have an herb garden. There are plenty of recipes online for different simmer pot ingredients. Here’s just one of the many a search will yield.
- A medium sauce pot
- Several sprigs of basil, rosemary or lavender
- A sliced lemon
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- 2 cups of water
- Mix all the ingredients in your pot and place on the stove.
- Simmer the pot on low. As the mixture evaporates, it will permeate your home with the delightful aroma of citrus, vanilla and fresh herbs.
- Keep an eye on your simmer pot, as the solid ingredients will burn once the liquid evaporates completely.
- Add water as needed to keep your simmer pot going until your entire home smells delicious.
Top Tips To Make Your House Smell Good
We all want our homes to smell good, especially when guests come. Nobody wants to be known as the owner of the house with the bad smell. But what are some ways we can make our homes smell good?
In this article, we will explore some top tips to make your house smell good. From using essential oils to opening the windows, read on for some helpful tips to make your home the envy of your neighbourhood.
Clean Your House Thoroughly
A house that smells clean reflects the care that its occupants take in maintaining it. There are many ways to keep your home smelling fresh and clean, but one of the most important things you can do is perform a thorough cleaning regularly.
This means not just surface cleaning but deep cleaning all the nooks and crannies where dirt and grime can build up.
- One way to ensure you’re thorough when cleaning your house is to create a cleaning schedule and stick to it. This schedule should include dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and scrubbing bathrooms. Depending on the size of your home, you may need to perform these tasks daily, weekly, or bi-weekly. You may need to clean more frequently if you have pets or young children.
- Another tip for keeping your house smelling fresh is to air it regularly. This is especially important if you live in an area with high pollution or pollen levels.
- Finally, consider using natural cleaners and scents instead of harsh chemicals. There are many recipes for homemade cleaners that use ingredients like vinegar and baking soda. These natural cleaners are just as effective as store-bought cleaners but don’t contain any toxic chemicals. You can also use essential oils to make your natural air fresheners.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
Ensuring proper ventilation is one of the most important ways to make your house smell good. This means that you should open windows and doors regularly to allow fresh air to circulate throughout your home.
This means opening windows and doors to let fresh air in and circulating the air throughout your home. Additionally, it would be best if you considered investing in professional cleaners such as HomePlus, who provide house cleaning services in Billerica, MA.
Use Natural Air Fresheners
We all want our homes to smell good. But sometimes, using artificial air fresheners can be harmful to our health. That’s why we should use natural air fresheners instead!
- There are many ways to freshen up your home naturally. You can simmer herbs and spices on the stove, diffuse essential oils, or make your own environmental spray.
- Simmering herbs and spices is a great way to make your whole house smell amazing. Add a few sprigs of fresh rosemary or a couple of cinnamon sticks to a pot of water and let it simmer on the stove. You can add citrus peels to the mix for an even fresher scent.
- Diffusing essential oils is another great way to freshen up your home naturally. Many different essential oil diffusers are available on the market, so you can choose one that fits your needs and budget. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil (or blend of oils) to the diffuser and enjoy the fresh scent.
- Making your own environmental spray is also a great way to freshen your home naturally. Combine equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and add a few drops of your favourite essential oil (or blend of oils). This DIY environmental spray can be used on carpets, furniture, curtains, and more.
Take Garbage Out Regularly
It’s no secret that garbage stinks. But did you know that it can make your whole house smell bad? That’s why taking the trash out regularly – at least once a week is important.
If you have a lot of people in your household or if you cook often, you may need to take the garbage out more frequently. Either way, it’s important to empty the trash can before it gets too full and starts to stink up your home.
In addition to taking the garbage out regularly, you can also try some of these other tips to keep your house smelling fresh:
- Vacuum regularly to remove dust and dirt from carpets and floors.
- Wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth or disinfectant wipes.
- Clean the bathroom regularly, including the toilet, sink, and shower/tub.
- Open windows periodically to let fresh air in.
- Burn scented candles or use essential oils diffusers.
- Keep pets clean and well-groomed.

Stovetop Potpourri
Stovetop potpourri isn’t just for the holidays, it’s a great way to freshen the air in your home any time of year! Fill a pot with water, add sliced apples, lemons, orange rinds, cinnamon, cloves and your favorite herbs and simmer on low heat adding water as needed. A mini crockpot is also a great heat source!
Use what you have in your house for a homemade diy simmering potpourri. The heat will permeate the wonderful scent throughout your house. This is an easy trick that is great for a party or just because it’s Monday.
I like to set a timer to check on the simmering potpourri every 30 minutes to see if I need to add water or turn it off.
Candle Warmers
Candles are great, but they’re not for everyone. If you have little kids or pets running around, they’re a legit safety concern.
Thanks to candle warmers, you no longer have to worry about soot, smoke or remembering to blow it out. In addition, scented wax will often retain their scent longer because you’re heating the wax rather than burning it.
There are thousands of different scents on the market (you can even pick them up at Target and most retailers that sell candles), so choose your favorite and your home could be filled with the aroma of pumpkin pie, sweet vanilla or fresh linen in a matter of minutes.
Essential Oils Diffuser
Diffusers that contain essential oils are all the rage right now. I love my diffuser because it’s so easy to use! Simply fill it with water, add a few drops of essential oils , and turn it on. The diffuser creates a fine aromatic mist that gently wafts through your home.
Tip: Your personal tastes will determine the best smelling essential oils for home fragrances. Not sure where to start with scents? Try combining chamomile, lavender and vanilla or a mixture of different citrus oils. A blend of rosemary, lemon and lavender is a favorite of mine as is orange with peppermint.
Start small with just a few drops in your diffuser and work your way up to more, to find what strength you prefer.
And if you love fall as much as I do, here is a list of Fall Essential Oil Diffuser Blends that are perfect for your home diffuser.
Tackle Pet Odors Before They Start
Living with dogs doesn’t mean your house has to smell like the pound. We’ve always had multiple dogs in our home and I’ve learned a few things over the years for keeping our house looking and smelling clean.
Brushing your dog and vacuuming up pet hair on a regular basis will make a huge difference in how your home smells.
Make your own pet deodorizer that will keep your furball smelling sweet between baths or trips to the groomer. You can also use it to spray dog beds.
- 3 Tablespoons rubbing alcohol
- 2 cups distilled water
- 8-12 drops essential oils
- spray bottle
When accidents happen, clean them up as soon as they happen. You must stay on top of odors before they take over. If you leave a mess, it will spread, stain, and smell.
We don’t have too many pet accidents in our house, but as our dogs age or when they are sick, it’s inevitable. To conquer pet stains and the VERY unlovely odor that they give off, I like to use Carbona Pet Stain & Odor Remover. The oxy-powered formula and built-in brush applicator get right in to get pet stains and odors right out.
Carbona carpet cleaners are SO EASY to use. Simply work the oxy-powered formula with Active Foam Technology into the spot/stain using Carbona’s brush head attached to the top of the bottle. Then blot up the excess with a clean damp cloth, let it dry and watch it disappear right before your eyes! It’ll save your carpet, rugs…and your day.
Carbona Pet Stain & Odor Remover will permanently remove stains so they won’t reappear AND neutralizes odors to discourage pet re-soiling. That way your guests don’t smell your furry friends before they see them!
Keep Kitchen Drain Clean and Fresh
Your garbage disposal can be a source of some weird smells, but there’s an easy way to clean it. Follow the link below to learn how to use white vinegar and baking soda to clean and deodorize your kitchen drain. You won’t believe the difference it makes!
I also keep my drain fresh smelling by running citrus rinds through the disposal, followed by lots of water.
Use Scented Cleaners and Eliminate Stinky Culprits
For a long-term good smelling home, you really do have to keep the odors from starting in the first place. Eliminate the stinky culprits; empty the trash, remove bad food from the refrigerator, stinky dog bed, litter box, musty throw pillows, damp laundry, dirty carpets, and rugs.
When getting rid of unpleasant smells in your home a good cleaning session is often enough to eliminate the source of bad smells. Using a cleaner that leaves behind a fresh scent makes it even better! Do a quick wipe-down with a great-smelling household cleaner – It’s easy and effective.
Deodorizing Room Spray
Deodorizing room sprays are great for freshening up just about any room for a quick fix. I like to keep a pretty room spray in the guest bathroom.
If you’re not a fan of store-bought room sprays you can easily make your own with essential oils. This simple recipe is a snap to make and safe to use either by spritzing into the air or spraying directly on that smelly recliner.
Make your own homemade deodorizing room spray:
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 2-3 drops essential oil – such as cinnamon, lemon, orange, or peppermint.
- 8-12 ounces of distilled water
- 8-10 ounce spray bottle
Mix the baking soda and essential oil thoroughly. Using a funnel to add this mixture to spray bottle. Add distilled water to bottle to fill and shake well. Now, it’s ready to use!
DIY Homemade Air Freshener
An economical and environmentally friendly way to keep your home odor-free and fresh. DIY Homemade Air Freshener with baking soda to absorbs odors, and essential oil to give a light pleasant fragrance.
I like to grab a few canning jars and some cute scrapbook paper to make my own cute little homemade air freshener in minutes! Perfect for the bathroom, bedroom, laundry room, or any room that you want to keep fresh!
Clean The Washing Machine
Musty, stinky smells in your home can often come from the washing machine. If you don’t clean your washer on a regular basis it can end up smelling worse than your sweaty workout shirt.
Mold and mildew in the washer lid and the door can be another cause of stink in your home. To save water and energy, HE washers incorporate designs such as low water use and air-tight seals that can create a higher potential for this build-up of residues. This causes not only an unpleasant odor but it can also reduce your washing machine’s efficiency and increase the likelihood of malfunctions.
Not only do I keep our washer door open (I close it, just don’t latch it) I also clean my front-loader once a month with Carbona Washing Machine Cleaner with Activated Charcoal . It works in standard and high-efficiency machines to rid them of odor-causing residues, dirt, and limescale……keeping my home smelling clean!
Then let your washing machine do all the work, after all, one of the most wonderful smells in the world is freshly laundered clothes.
Fresh Flowers and Plants
As cliché as this might be, fresh flowers are always a beautiful way to bring a fresh scent to your space! Roses, lilies, lilacs, peonies or whatever you like really, there are varieties of assortments to choose from.
Flowering plants are also an awesome way to bring beautiful scents into your home. Try jasmine, hyacinth, gardenia or even a lemon tree.
Having fresh herbs in the kitchen can be heavenly. Who doesn’t like the refreshing aroma of mint, oregano, or basil?
BONUS TIP: A COMPLETELY FREE WAY TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE SMELL GOOD
Want a completely free way to make your house smell clean and fresh? Open several windows to help create a cross-draft and force the old air out and let the fresh air in! Fresh air not only moves out the stale air and lingering smells but who doesn’t love the clean scent of fresh air. Obviously, opening doors and windows is not a good option when it’s too hot or too cold, but I never pass up a beautiful day to air out the house.
Now, go use some of these tips to make your house smell good, fresh and clean. Really, whose house doesn’t need that once in a while!?
