What percentage of hair transplants are successful?

Hair Transplant Success Rate

The success or survival rate of a hair transplant is a common concern for many candidates suffering from hair loss. There has been lots of debate in the past decade over what method of hair transplantation yields a higher survival rate. We have prepared an article describing the survival rates of each transplantation technique and an explanation of the variance.

The transection rate, while not as common of a concern for potential hair transplant candidates should be examined before deciding on a hair transplant surgeon. The lower the transection rate, the more skilled the surgeon is.

Success Rates of Hair Transplants

Currently hair transplants have between a 95-98% success rate on average. The reason for this very high survival rate of the transplanted grafts is because the hair follicles come from the patient’s own scalp, there is no chance of graft rejection.

In the past FUE hair transplants had a lower success rate than FUT hair transplants as the hair grafts were weaker and as such had a poorer survival rate. While this used to be true, technological advancements over the past five to ten years have greatly improved the survival rate of the FUE hair grafts.

Reasons for a hair transplant

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) released a study in 2018 comparing the success rates of the two hair transplant methods. The study found that both methods performed equally well within all parameters, with the FUE method performing slightly better in some ways. The study was too small however, to conclude that the FUE has a better success rate than the FUT method.

Nevertheless, the success of a hair transplant is often also determined by the usage of effective hair loss medication. Especially young patients normally need to complement the hair transplant with finasteride or minoxidil in order to achieve a lasting result.

Sometimes the donor area is not full enough to provide enough hair to transplant and cover the balding area to the extent the patient desires. When this occurs surgeons may try to transplant hair from other parts of the body like the beard, chest, thighs etc. This form of transplantation does not have as high of a survival rate as the traditional FUE and FUT methods. This is due to the genetic makeup of hair varying more the further it gets from the scalp. Beard hair transplantations have a success rate of only 85% with hair further from the scalp having even lower success rates.

In addition, the hair grafts do not always have as high of a success rate when it comes to covering scar tissue. The raised scar tissues do not always have a sufficient blood supply available to support the growth of transplanted grafts. There are medications or treatments available to patients that flatten the scars making them more viable for hair transplantation.

Success of Hair Transplants for Self-Image

Thinning hair and balding are often symptoms associated with aging, this can lead to decreased self-confidence for individuals suffering from hair loss. Individuals who experience hair loss at a younger age are especially impacted and often feel as though they look far older than they actually are, which leads to low self-esteem. A full head of hair is often a sign of beauty that patients wish to regain to restore their youthful, healthy appearance.

According to our hair transplant statistics with over 1,000 participants a hair transplant has a significant positive impact on the self-esteem of most patients:

Transection Rates

A transection occurs when the hair follicle is damaged, this inhibits or completely stops the growth of hair. This damage can occur either during the extraction or during the implantation of the hair graft. During an FUT hair transplant the transection happens when the surgeon cuts through hair follicles or damages it. The FUE technique can damage the hair follicle if too much pressure is applied to the scalp when removing the grafts. Blunt instruments or incorrect tools can cause damage when implanting the hair follicles into the recipient channels.

Regardless of the surgeon’s skill or experience, transections will always occur. As a result, there are acceptable transection rates used to judge a surgeon’s work. The best hair transplant surgeons will have a transection rate of 5% or less. A transection rate between 5-15% is still more than acceptable for many hair surgeons. Robotic methods of hair transplantation have an average transection rate of 10%. Less capable hair transplant surgeons can have transection rates between 20-75%, you should look to find a hair surgeon with a transection rate less than 15%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all hair transplants successful?

Hair transplants have an average survival rate between 95-98% for both the FUE and FUT methods. However, body hair transplants don’t have as high of a survival rate as the genetic makeup of hair varies more the further it is from the scalp.

What makes a man notice a woman?

Is a hair transplant permanent?

When a hair transplant is performed correctly, it will be permanent. The grafts taken from the donor area are resistant to the hormone DHT, which is responsible for hair loss. This means the transplanted grafts will never fall out, giving a permanent, lasting result.

What is the most effective hair transplant method?

Although the FUE hair transplant has grown significantly in popularity over the last decade, neither hair method is better than the other. There are advantages and disadvantages associated with both techniques and the more appropriate method is determined by the candidate’s hair loss.

Success Rate of Hair Transplant

The success rate of hair transplant performed by the specialist and the team is very high. We can measure success in hair transplantation with the new hair that grows and the naturalness of the hairline. since the hairline is specially determined, our operation results are guaranteed to be natural.

However, the patient’s newly grown hair achieves the desired appearance at the end of the first year and success is understood at the end of 1 year. The more regularly our patients use the shampoos and lotions recommended by the experts, the higher the success rate will be.

Success Rate of the Technique of Hair Transplant

One of the most important factors increasing the success rate of hair transplant is the technique used for transplantation. The best hair transplant technique used today is the FUE hair transplant technique. In the Sapphire Fue technique, it is possible to achieve very successful results as the hair follicles are taken one by one from the donor area and transplanted one by one to the transplant area. Hair transplantation with Sapphire Fue has a high success rate.

Success Rate of the Expert of Hair Transplant

Today, many hair transplant centers use the Fue technique. However, not all hair transplant centers can achieve the same success. There can be quite a bit of difference between the success rates of two different hair transplant specialists. Both the techniques they use and their hand skills affect the hair transplantation success rate.

Effects of the Patient to the Success Rate

Whether the patient who will have hair transplant is male or female can decrease or increase the hair transplantation success rate. The success rate between men and women is not the same.

Success Rate in Men:

In hair transplantation, hair follicles are usually collected from the nape area. The purpose of using hair in the nape area is in order to not to spoil the aesthetic appearance. In men, the hair in the front and top areas is shed the most. But even in the men who lost most of their hair, the hair on the nape continues to exist. Because the hair in this area is different from other hairs. These hairs do not shed for life as long as there is no intervention. Therefore, the success rate of hair transplantation is high in men.

Success Rate in Women:

Although the hair on the nape of men and other areas has different characteristics, all hairs in women have the same characteristics. Of course, genetic hair loss in women is a rare event. However, when there is a possible loss, it happens regardless of the nape area or the front areas. Therefore, the hair of a woman who has a hair transplant can be shed again later. This may reduce the success rate of hair transplantation in women.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hair transplant 100 percent successful?
According to clinical research, 85-95 percent of all implanted grafts thrive in the transplanted location. Hair transplants are often quite successful, as evidenced by this high proportion. Some patients are concerned that, like other transplants, they would have graft rejection.

How long will hair transplant last?
The good news is that a hair transplant operation conducted by a qualified, experienced hair restoration specialist can last a lifetime. Because the genetic inclination for hair loss is found in the follicle rather than the scalp, this is the case.

Why did my hair transplant not work?
Mishandling grafts, even after they’ve been transplanted, is one of the most prevalent causes of hair transplant failure.

success rate of hair transplant

Once upon a time, if you lost your hair you just had to live with it, find a great wig, wear a quirky scarf, or embrace an endless array of hats. These days, not so much.

If you find yourself going bald, or losing patches of hair, it’s now possible to do something about it. Which is great news if you’re just not down with being hairless. Yes, we’re talking hair transplants. But what’s the hair transplant success rate, and is a hair transplant always successful?

How Successful are Hair Transplants?

Hair transplants are hugely popular – and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon. According to this report, in 2021, over 703,000 hair transplant procedures were carried out worldwide.

Over the years, as hair transplant technology has improved, the success rate of hair transplants has improved too – and this is probably the main reason why hair transplants continue to soar in popularity.

Successful hair transplants depend on how many of your transplanted hair grafts survive. For a graft to be successful, it needs to take root and produce hair growth once surgery has been completed. You might hope that every one of the hair grafts that are transplanted will take root and grow new hair, but this would be extraordinary.

A highly successful hair transplant would be when around 90% of your hair grafts take root and grow new hair. However, a hair transplant can also be considered a success if this 90% benchmark isn’t met. That’s because, you can still enjoy dramatic hair growth even when fewer hair grafts take root.

  • Boost nutrients and oxygenation to hair follicles
  • Ensure hair has a good life span

This intensive approach that ensures the existing hair and scalp is treated before and after the procedure is one of the main reasons why we continue to have such a high success rate of hair transplant in Turkey.

How do I know if my Hair Transplant is Successful?

Having a hair transplant can be a nerve-wracking experience, and one reason why is that it can be quite disconcerting to see all of your hair grafts fall out between weeks one and five. However, this is absolutely normal, and needs to happen in order for new hair to grow.

It takes a while for new hair to grow, but at around the six-month mark you should be able to see your new hair growth, and by 12-18 months post treatment, you should be enjoying your full results. It can feel like an agonisingly long time to wait, but when you choose Este, it will be worth it!

FUE Hair Transplant Success Rate

FUE hair transplants have one of the highest success rates at around 95% — 100%. This number works on the basis that a FUE hair transplant is considered successful when anything upwards of 60-70% of grafts survive. This is the same for the hair transplant crown area success rate as when 60-70% of grafts survive, the client will still achieve good hair growth and coverage.

What about Female Hair Transplant Success Rate?

When we talk of hair transplants, we often immediately think of them in relation to men, but women are able to have this treatment too. However, it is only a select few who will be suitable for a female hair transplant treatment and this is down to the type of hair loss they’re experiencing.

According to this article, only around 2-5% of women with hair loss will be suitable for treatment. They are women with hair loss due to —

  • Non-hormonal mechanical or traction alopecia
  • Surgery which has left hair loss at the incision areas
  • Female pattern baldness such as hairline recession and thinning at the crown
  • Trauma such as burning, or scarring
  • Alopecia marginalis

Are Hair Transplants Successful?

Hair transplant success rates depend on many factors – some to do with the client, some with the surgeon, some with the type of hair transplant carried out.

At Este, we’re proud to achieve brilliant hair transplant success rates again and again, and it’s one of the reasons why we were voted Turkey’s #1 Hair Transplant Clinic of 2021, and were winners of the Most Trusted Multi-Practice Clinic 2022 at the LuxLife awards.
