Top smartphone brands ranked by number of shipments

Recent data on the top smartphone brands ranked by the number of shipments shows that Apple shipped out 70 million of its smartphone units in Q4 2022. This is 14.1% less than the total number of phone shipments it made in Q4 2021. It also makes up 23% of the global smartphone shipments market share. In other words, almost one out of every four smartphones delivered in Q4 2022 was manufactured by Apple.

In second place, rival brand Samsung shipped out 58.3 million smartphones in Q4 2022, a 15.5% annual decrease and accounting for a 19.2% market share.

Together, Samsung and Apple’s global smartphone shipments market share total 42.2%, which means that more than two out of five smartphones sent out in Q4 2022 were produced by these two companies.

Third on this list of top smartphone companies (by shipment) is Xiaomi, which shipped 33.2 million devices in Q4 2022. This represents a 26.2% year-over-year decrease.

Incidentally, less than two years ago, the company reported record revenue growth of 64% in the second quarter of last year, during which it outperformed Apple to become the second-largest smartphone manufacturer.

The fourth-most popular phone brand is Oppo, with 29.6 million shipments in Q4 2022. This marks a 12.7% annual decrease, a significant decrease from last year’s numbers. Rounding out the list of the top smartphone brands is vivo, which shipped 23.4 million devices, a 20.1% annual decrease.

What is the best smartphone to buy in 2023? Our technology reviewers are divided in their opinions. Rob Waugh has tried the brand new iPhone 14 and thinks it justifies (just about) the £850 price tag. Jack Rear maintains that the iPhone 13 is just as good – and that, in fact, the iPhone 12 from two years ago is the one to get. Jack also thinks you’re better off sticking with a Google Pixel 6, whereas Rob would definitely upgrade to a Pixel 7.

What is too big for God?

«For at least a few years now, new phones have tended to be iterative rather than revolutionary, so if you find a good deal on an even older model, that’s still worth considering,» Jack says. «If it’s less than about five years old, you’ll find a pretty good camera, lots of storage for photos and videos, a fully stocked app store and a good screen. Check out my guide to the best budget smartphones for sub-£500 options.»

So who’s right? Below are Rob and Jack’s reviews of the best smartphones in 2023, followed by an FAQ section and a guide to some of the jargon you’ll come across when phone shopping. But if you’re in a hurry, here’s a quick look at our top five:

Which are the best smartphones in 2023? At a glance

  • Best overall: Google Pixel 7
  • Best value: Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • Best Apple phone: iPhone 14 Plus
  • Best Samsung phone: Galaxy S23
  • Best folding phone: Samsung Z Fold4

How to find the best smartphone deal

Smartphone buying is not getting cheaper: the Galaxy Z Fold 4 reviewed by Jack below is nearly £1,800. Although most come cheaper than that, they’re all a significant investment, so getting the right model is more important than ever.

There are some good mobile phone deals allowing you to buy your phone through a network on a two- or three-year payment plan, but in our opinion you’re best buying a phone outright and taking on a sim-only deal. The prices we give below are based on this. Buying the phone outright gives you more choice when it comes to data plans and the ability to jump between providers when they offer cut-price deals.
